Saving Baby Garang’s Life

Thank you for so faithfully supporting CSI’s efforts to Free, Feed and Heal the Captives.

2006 was a year of great achievement, especially in Sudan. CSI aided the displaced, freed slaves and other victims of genocide in Sudan by delivering 13,200 survival kits, 149 tons of food and seed, and $41,916 worth of medicines. CSI also contributed to the liberation of 2,942 slaves. Altogether, CSI served over 100,000 victims of genocide last year.

One victim comes vividly to mind: A five-day-old baby boy named Garang.

John Eibner with Baby Garang CSI

I first set eyes on Garang while distributing survival kits at a primitive settlement of displaced Sudanese. Garang’s ill mother, hoping for a miracle, presented me with her limp, unconscious son. Tiny Garang would not take the breast. He was dehydrated and was running a dangerously high temperature. Dr. Gloria White Hammond, a pediatrician and accompanying CSI Board Member, reckoned the baby had just a few hours to live.

We immediately jumped into an old Land Cruiser and drove two hours to a bush clinic. On the way prayers for healing were raised. Garang was so thin and dehydrated it was difficult for Dr. Gloria to find a vein for the vital intravenous treatment. But she succeeded. Within the hour Garang opened his eyes and showed other signs of life. Recovery was slow, but Garang survived. It was a miracle.

Just as baby Garang survived, the people of Southern Sudan and their persecuted church have survived decades of genocidal warfare. They suffered heavy losses. But they have survived. This is also a miracle. God has performed these miracles, using people like you, Dr. Gloria, Joe Madison, Pastors Hans Heidi and Rod Parsley, and many others. Where God performs miracles there is hope for the future. Thank you again for playing such an important role, through your prayers and financial support, for the survival of baby Garang and of the entire Southern Sudanese community.

As I write, I am preparing to return to Southern Sudan. Please pray for the success of our mission. Please also continue to provide financial support for CSI’s program of Freeing, Feeding and Healing. The survival of so many children like Garang depends on it.

Sincerely
Dr. John Eibner
